What luxe buy do I buy?

Working at a magazine has its advantages. Apart from the obvious (I’m now surrounded by amazing clothing, footwear, bags and jewellery for the better part of my day), since it’s my first official job, it means getting paid. Winner. So now I feel like I need to celebrate this new chapter of my life – have something to associate it with. But before you break out the balloons, let me explain - I think the only way to appropriately celebrate is by taking the plunge into the overwhelmingly exciting world of luxury.
I reckon the first luxe purchase is a defining moment in a girl’s life. Like buying a car or falling in love, it comes with a history, research, careful thought, planning, saving and culminates in that all-important investment. And like with any new relationship, you’re always thinking about the next time you’ll see them and getting butterflies every time you do. A luxe purchase is not something you want to take lightly. You don’t want to break up with your Miu Miu because you’re not a good fit, and you can’t tell your Chanel handbag it’s you, and not it. Well you could, but that’d be like Edward leaving Bella and I certainly do not want to relive that again anytime soon. So you can see why I’m taking this first luxe purchase thing very seriously.
It’s also one of those moments that you’ll remember and tell your kids about later on. A purchase that whenever you see it, touch it or wear it, memories will come flooding back. Take my mum. When I told her my plans for my first pay cheque, she relived her first big purchase – “a beautiful hot pink coat from David Jones,” she tells me, while staring off into the distance – “I loved it, but then left it on the train.” Good one mum. It’s not just her either, I asked around the office and each person came back to me instantly with an answer. Anna’s was a pair of Marc Jacobs she bought when she was living in NY for a summer internship. Sarah’s was a Prada cuff. Dee bought a Chloé bag, which she’s used everyday since. Marky purchased a Prada bag because she couldn’t stop thinking about it while she was overseas. Kimberlee got a Derek Lam tote and Tina got a Marc Jacobs bag. So apart from sensing a strong Marc Jacobs and Prada following around here, it’s apparent that the first luxe buy is a crucial one. I don’t want to be huddled crying in a corner or locking myself in my room due to severe buyer’s remorse (you may laugh but crazier things have happened…).
There are some people (like my boyfriend who firstly asked what luxe meant and then wondered why it was necessary to have such an item – bless him) who just don’t understand the importance of the purchase. The history that is being created at that moment. But all of my fashionista sisters out there do. They’re stamping their Gucci heels and clapping their YSL-ringed hands in support of this moment. And I want to know – what was your first luxe purchase? Share your buys, whether they’re still bringing you joy or have been relegated to the back of your cupboard, as I need all the help I can get in this decision. Because in the famous words of Jay-Z, this is history in the making.
