The trend try-er
Posted: 28 November 2008
“I’m a trend whore, too.” These are the words an overly enthusiastic sales assistant used in an effort to convince me that, despite being vertically challenged, I could actually wear a hectically printed maxi-dress. Initially, I was taken back by this statement. After all, most strangers don’t equate personal style with the word “whore” very often. However, after leaving the shop, offending maxi in hand, I began to think about the reasoning behind this ludicrous statement.
In reflecting back on my last six months of buying, I realise I’ve been quite flirtatious. Florals? Check. Black rats? Check. Maxis, high-waisted, studs, sequins, stripes, leggings, lace… the list goes on. Rest assured I do repeat the golden mantra when I shop: Thou shall not be a slave to trends. But as I flick through the pages of glossy magazines, I hear the familiar sound of the fashion whip crack.
It’s a phenomenon I cannot explain. Kind of like taking the ‘lite’ option at Macca’s - you just want to believe it’s good for you. Much the same way I want to believe the outfit will look just as good on me, if not better, than a supermodel. Of course, the haze always lifts and the harsh reality dawns that this new buy is for weekend wear only – as in the part of the weekend where you stay indoors… at all times.
This shows my buying habits are not as whore-like as the sales assistant assumed. I do know the difference between the real deal and the ‘lite option’ and I know where to draw the line before my friends look on worryingly. I’m simply a trend try-er. All I need to do now is work on the trying bit more, before the buying. Here’s hoping.
