What are you wearing and where is it from?
I am wearing a black, frilled pencil skirt from Portmans. My top is a basic Kookai cream singlet with a ruffle neckline and my shoes are tan, snake skin heels from Joanne Mercer. My turquoise embellished bangle is a treasure that I found in Prague while travelling in Europe!
What’s your favourite local store and why?
I’m from Adelaide and my favourite local store is a boutique in North Adelaide called Elenca – it’s so unique.. Elena, the owner, offers a mixture of well-known designer labels like Thurley and Wayne Cooper, while also stocking inexpensive pieces by many up and coming labels. Elena searches for unique labels and always selects gorgeous, feminine pieces. Plus they also offer a stunning range of heels!
What do you love about fashion?
I love that it gives you the opportunity to express yourself to the world and even though it’s always changing, a person’s style remains.
What trends are you coveting at right now?
I love colour blocking – I am trying to colour block as much as possible before the cold weather hits and the stores are full of neutral tones. I also love anything high-waisted, in particular skirts and shorts. I can’t go past a great pair of colourful wedges and a bright clutch!
What was the highlight of your week at SHOP?
It is hard to pin point the highlight of my week at SHOP. I loved visiting all of the different areas of the magazine and seeing the pages, pictures and stories evolve from the draft stage to final. I also really enjoyed the tasks that I was given, in particular the wedding special research, which gave me the opportunity to be creative and put forward ideas of products to feature in SHOP! I love brainstorming and trying to come up with something different, so this was right up my alley. After spending a week here, I have a greater appreciation for the magazine and all of the hard work that goes into creating it each month.
What surprised you most about life at a glossy magazine?
I was very surprised at the number of people who bring the magazine together – there are far less than I expected! Like any industry, from the outside you only see the glamorous side of the role and I found it really interesting to experience the behind the scenes, day to day tasks that are imperative in ensuring the magazine comes together.
What did you learn in your week at SHOP?
I decided on a career change and my placement at SHOP was the first step. I came here to get a feel for working at a fashion magazine and to look at the different types of roles. I learnt a lot about the positions and most importantly, that everyone plays a really imperative role in bringing the mag to life. I also realised it’s important to be a multi-tasking extraordinaire. Amy Starr, associate editor, explained most of the girls at SHOP are multi-skilled and this was certainly evident when observing what they girls do. I met with Pete in Advertising during my placement and learnt lots about how the advertising department works. He explained the process of presenting creative ideas to advertisers, the placement of advertisements within the magazine and the selection of advertisers to match themed issues. After my week at SHOP, the most valuable things I’ve learnt are actually about myself – I love to write and be creative, but I think that my skills and background in media and sales are well matched to advertising. I definitely think a role in advertising is something that I would love to explore.
