Welcome to the beauty interns blog. Find out all the goss and going-ons from SHOP’s beauty cupboard…

One of the downsides of being a student is the serious lack of coinage. But one of the upsides of being a SHOP beauty intern is I get to check out the beauty cupboard. My aim this week: to discover the best blushes for under $20.

When it comes to ‘cheeky’ trends for winter, MAC make-up artist Theodora Watkins says,“the hottest colours on the runway this season were beautiful-pale peaches and soft, girlie, light pinks.”

For a highlighting blush you can’t go past Sportsgirl Cheek Colour in Love is Peach, $12.95, 1300 250 100, sportsgirl.com.au. With an ever so slight hint of gold shimmer, this blush illuminates, while providing ever-so-subtle colour. It’s super-pigmented so use it sparingly and build colour gradually if you want it darker.

Mousse formulas are hot right now and with good reason. The Maybelline NY Dream Mousse Blush in Pink Frosting, $16.95, 1300 369 327, has a whipped, light texture, that glides onto the cheek and feels smooth on the skin. A tip for applying a crème blush like this, is to start at your ears, taking it to the apples of your cheeks. But, Watkins says, “Never go beneath the bottom of your nose as it can drag down the face.”

For a matt finish, I found the Australis Powder Puff Blush in Flirtatious, $11.95, 1300 650 981. The brush is soft and helps to give your cheeks a natural, fairy floss flush. It comes with a mirrored lid, so you can reapply it everywhere you go. Genius!

P.S. Until my next blog… I’ m taking beauty requests. So, let me know if you have any tips or suggestions on what I should be looking out for in the depths of the SHOP beauty cupboard.

  • I was actually looking at picking up a new blush tomorrow so this blog is perfectly timed. The Dream Mousse sounds fab, so I might give that a go. Thanks for the tips on application.

Would love your recommendation on budget friendly mascaras. I've always found it tricky finding a good quality one that doesn't break the bank. Report

  • What a great blog!
I second kat's request for a review on cheap student-friendly bronzer for less than $20, and a bit of info on the best bronzers for different skin tones would be fantastic too Report
