There must be something in the water on the North Island – the picturesque place is bubbling over with cool boutiques and local talent.

Auckland
Don’t let the pretty black sands of Piha distract you. There is shopping aplenty to be done in the capital.

Superette
They’ve got cool threads from the likes of Camilla and Marc and Ksubi, yummy candles and fashion books. Plus, a kooky range of cameras — we picked up a Polaroid 300.’ 282 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby, +1 64 9 360 2360, superette.co.nz.

Jaimie
Mother-daughter team Di Armstrong and Jaimie Webster founded this quirky boutique, home to Vivienne Westwood, Acne, and designs from Webster’s eponymous label Jaimie. 270 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby, +1 64 9 361 4000.

Ruby
Pick up something from a Ruby store and you’ll be the envy of your friends. Their pleated minis, furry jumpers and jewel-toned swing coats are perfect for casual weekends. 4 Teed St, Newmarket, +1 64 9 522 6658, rubynz.com.

Workshop
With its high ceilings and marbled floor, you’d think you were shopping in SoHo. There’s a rad mix of international brands like Alexander Wang, See by Chloé and Isabel Marant — it’s also the main stockist for local label Helen Cherry. 74 Mackelvie St, Ponsonby, +1 64 9 361 3727.

The Department Store
It’s owned by Karen Walker, hair and make-up artist Stephen Marr and Dan Gosling from Stolen Girlfriends Club. Inside, you get an amazing mix of cool homewares, Kiwi and international names, plus the latest Topshop collection. There’s also a beauty room on the middle floor with its own tea room. We recommend the mani and pedi combo. 10 Northcroft St, Takapuna, +1 64 9 488 0585.

Queenstown
One of the prettiest cities you’ve ever seen, combining excellent fashion with great food and wine.

Angel Divine
A one-stop shop for all your favourite Kiwi labels such as Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Zambesi, Nom*d and Twenty-Seven Names. 3 Searle Lne, Queenstown, +1 64 3 442 8988.

The Salvation Army Queenstown Family Store
Rumour has it rich holidaymakers stop here before jetting home. We spotted DKNY and Christian Dior! 67 Shotover St, Queenstown Centre, +1 64 3 441 8463.

Louis Vuitton
A small, intimate store, LV brings a little bit of luxe to the heart of Queenstown. 12 The Mall, Queenstown, +1 64 3 441 8002.
