Oscars 2010: The year of the strapless gown

I had high hopes for the Oscars this year. High hopes that are currently a little deflated. The nominees did everything they could to out-shine one another in the lead up to the event. Carey Mulligan pulled out all the glamour stops in Lanvin, Marni and Prada and the gorgeous Gabby Sidibe worked chiffon on every red carpet from here to Timbuktu. But for the big event there’s no other way to describe them but… meh.

Everyone just failed to wow me – which, call me crazy, but I’ve come to expect from this event. It’s hyped for months and designers fight to dress the nominees so why shouldn’t they wow?

There was the barely-there number on Anna Kendricks, an ill-fitting wishwashy gown worn by the beautiful Amanda Seyfried, a school formal-esque bodice and darted skirt on Kate Winslet (who usually gets it so right), an I’ve-definitely-been-styled-by-Rachel-Zoe sparkle gown on Cameron Diaz, and Demi Moore in a dress I’m pretty sure she’s worn three times before. Or perhaps it’s because Every. Single. Dress. Was. Strapless.

Strapless, my friends, was the look for the Oscars in 2010.

What was your take? Any faves?

  • strapless everywhere! loved sandra bullock. and her speech was great don't you think? perfect oscar speech. Report

  • As someone who can't wear strapless dresses due to a bountiful bosum, this regularly drives me crazy, as I like to see dresses I can at least kind of seek out for my own formal events. I did like Carey Mulligan's dress but thought her earrings were the real star with her pixie cut. And Vera Farmiga's dress was at least a little different and I loved the colour on her. Kristen Stewart's was also pretty good but I wish she'd thrust her shoulders back and at least pretend to look gracious.

  • Try finding a wedding dress with straps! As someone forced to read a lot of wedding mags due to work, it is amazing how many of them either have spaghetti straps (didn't they go out of fashion in, like, 2001?) and none at all. I wish designers would making a couple that you can actually wear a bra with so you can DANCE when you want to.

Especially given that red carpet dresses are inspiration for bridal gowns, it can drive you mad. Report

  • I completely agree that the whole event was a but meh. Normally i have an outsanding favourite but i only kinda liked some of the dresses this year. I think Cameron Diaz looked good, but to be honest i thinki everybody is so set on being 'safe' and not ending up on the worst dressed list the next day that everyone is just being BORING!

    Anna Kendricks also llooked nice...

This was the worst oscars in a long time on all fronts.. Report

  • Yeh nothing spectacular this year. Boring and all the design styles are like copy cat! Report
