Hot trend: Manscaping

Does the man in your life need a bit of a tidy? Are his brows looking more John Howard than Zac Efron? Well, whether it’s a man in dire need of some grooming or simply a fella who would enjoy a few hours of pampering then Face of Man offers the solution.
Face of Man salon is located in the historic Sydney Strand Arcade and is inspired by the traditional English gentlemen’s barbershop but with a modern, contemporary feel. The salon offers male-only services ranging from hot lather close shaves and beard trimmings to facials waxing and shoe shines. Established in 1978, this popular salon proves that manscaping has been an underground hit with males for years!
While it’s an easier task these days to get a guy to wear a pink shirt and ‘borrow’ your moisturiser, many ‘blokey’ blokes still draw the line at getting facials or any kind of salon treatment that the ladies have been enjoying for years. Gift certificates to salons are always a great gift for your girlfriends, and we don’t see why the boys should miss out.
We got a typical guy to roadtest an indulgent Face of Man pampering session, to see what he thought.
What were your thoughts on ‘manscaping’ & salons prior to your pampering session? It felt a bit like a guilty pleasure – something you’d enjoy and like to do, but were embarrassed about. Imagine your mates catching you!
What did they do for you, and what did you think of it?They gave a little bit of everything, from a massage with various oils to being steamed and masks applied, there was some eyebrow correction and black head removal, I almost lost count of the amount of oils and treatments they actually ended up using. It was so relaxing I had to keep myself from falling asleep!
Would you do it again, or recommend it to your friend? To be honest, the worst part was when it finished because I didn’t want it to end. So yes, I would definitely recommend it. I think it would be a unique way to start off a bucks night or something to do before the races, when you have an excuse to get spruced up.
It was actually a surprisingly masculine experience overall. You were given the option of a scotch on arrival to relax any nerves and sure it had some incense burning and slow music playing, however it wasn’t Celine Dion and it smelt more like a country resort than a girly nail salon.
What was the highlight of the session? The whole experience was a highlight. The attention to detail throughout and the novelty of being pampered is something I don’t think will ever get old.
