Florist and owner of Ruby Slipper Designs, Samantha Mitchell has a retro abode filled with sentimental pieces and vintage knick knacks.
“We love our lounge room and dining room. It’s where we entertain our friends and family so the space and the pieces we keep in it each tell a story," Samantha says. “I’ve written my thesis on colour so it is such a crucial part of my decorating. To me, colour is more important than furniture when creating the look and feel of a home.”
Ideas to steal
1. Use colour to your advantage. Shades of blue and green are calming so they’re ideal for the bedroom. Warm colours like pink, orange and red are mood-boosting so they’re great for social areas like the lounge room and dining area. Strawberry enamel kettle, $49.99, Lifestyle Ensemble, (03) 9010 5433, lifestyleensemble.com.au.
2. Group like-coloured items together throughout the house, regardless of their vintage. It creates colour harmony which makes any space appear organised and balanced. Tall stem vase, $295, and Italian vase, $225, vintage from Envision 54, (02) 9550 6650.
3. Fresh flowers make a world of difference and don’t be afraid to think outside the vase. For a fresh change, pop some blooms in an empty jam jar or milk jug for a point of difference. Glass milk jug, $2.50, St Vincent De Paul Society, (02) 6202 1200.
