Is this pic Frenchy-cool or disturbing?

I just returned from a week in Paris. Divine. The food, the fashion, the pretty streets… there was style at every turn.

I’ve visited the city a few times in the past, but never appreciated it like I did on this trip. But the best thing about this beautiful city? The amazingly stylish kids. The way the French dress their kids is just beyond. So subtle, so cool. Obvious shades like baby blue and candy pink just don’t exist. It’s all about muted, sophisticated hues – think moss green, dusky pink, cool grey, mustard and cornflower blue. And the baby and kids’ boutiques are better than the stores for grown-ups.

So when I heard about the controversial photograph of a little Parisian girl with a dummy that Scott Schuman posted on his blog The Sartorialist, then swiftly removed, I was left with mixed feelings.

My first instinct is to rave over this little cherub’s outfit. I mean, come on – can you fault it? If only more adults could come up with such a perfectly pulled-together look.

But I can understand why some people find it disturbing. Okay, so it’s a little weird she even has a dummy in the first place… she looks, what, five? But for me, the disturbing part is the frown, which makes us feel she wasn’t happy to have her picture taken.

I’m all for a natural, candid alternative to a cheesy fake smile… but you’d have to agree that she doesn’t exactly look happy.

What does everyone else think? Was Scott Schuman right in taking it down? Or is it a big hoopla over nothing?

  • The dummy is a bit weird...but the outfit is adorable. Again I think we are becoming a little bit too PC!! Report

  • Big hoopla over nothing! I would be more concerned with the fashion labels that put full faces of make up on kids! Report

  • Hmmm.
maybe she is not wanting her space invaded by the photographer - hence the frown.
