How Do I Look? with Jeannie Mai comes Down Under

She’s the girl with the Eww Tube who coined the term “wearpist”, and now this Tim Tam-loving LA-local and host of
How Do I Look? has hit our shores and is ready to get down to business.
And what exactly is her business, might you ask? Well, a little word Jeannie likes to call “wearapy”. After seeking out those who are, erm stylistically challenged, Jeannie makes it her mission to give them an entire overhaul – and not just clothes, but their confidence too.
Each episode sees the candidate meet Jeannie in their pre-treatment garb, to ask her: “how do I look?”. Let’s just say that answers like “you look like you just finished the night shift” are the polite version of what everyone is really thinking.
The Australian episode featuring our very own “babe from Bronte” was filmed during Jeannie’s whirlwind trip to Sydney last week, and we caught up with her to discuss frocks, followers and (yes, really) food.
So what are you doing in Australia?
“This is my first time in Sydney and today we’ve shot an Aussie who’s going to be featured in an episode for the new season that will air here in February.”
Do you still have the Eww Tube?
“Yes! Believe it or not we actually packaged the Eww Tube up to come out here. Going through customs with a Eww Tube was tricky - we had to stop and explain that it was just a large, see-through plastic cylinder for sucking up ugly clothes - so we could actually get it through!”
I hear you’re quite big on social media? Do you tweet your followers?
“I do. It’s the only way I can talk to everybody. What I love about Sydney is that everyone is really active on Twitter! So many people showed up to the QVB when I ambushed our guest today, because I sent out a tweet beforehand.”
Do you give any fashion tips in your tweets?
“Yeah, totally! Just last weekend I got this tweet from a fan, when she sent in a picture of herself wearing a white dress that she had planned to wear to a wedding, and that’s the one thing you gotta be careful about [at a wedding], because it’s really important not to upstage the bride. So I gave her some tips on how to make it work and to pair it with a cute blazer.”
What do you think about Australian food?
“I love it. This is actually one of the top three places I’ve wanted to visit and I can honestly say it’s now a favourite. The people are all super friendly and the guys are all really cute, but I really love the food! In the four days I’ve been here, I’ve gone through two packs of double-coated Tim Tams, I’ve been to the Löwenbräu Keller down in The Rocks and had their pork knuckle, and tomorrow I’m going to try a meat pie at Harry’s Café de Wheels!”
