Holly Baxter is the founder of the popular online jewellery store, Trilby Phoenix. We chat to her about how she turned her dream into a reality.
Why did you decide to start you own business?Having your own business allows you a lot of creative freedom. It’s great to be able to work with an idea from start to finish – it makes the result more fulfilling.
How did you get your start? As in any business, years of thorough planning and research are needed. Establishing Trilby Phoenix required a lot of travel, researching overseas designers as well as working with a web designer to ascertain the most workable format for online shopping. Then of course, finding a suitable location and space for a showroom.
What labels do you stock? We stock a large range but the most notable at the moment is Lily Allen’s new jewellery collection, which has just launched in the UK and is available for pre order now – Trilby Phoenix is the exclusive Australian stockist. Other labels include CC Skye, House of Harlow 1960, Fiona Paxton, 6126 Collection by Lindsay Lohan, Love Quotes, One of a Kind, Little Rooms, Emily Elizabeth Jewellery and more each day.
What trends are big this summer?Statement pieces, bold geometric designs, bright colours, prominent gemstones and embellishments, exotic ethnic-inspired beading, and stacked ornate cuffs.
What are the celebs wearing?Luxe basics are everywhere right now. David Lerner does a fabulous range that’s loved by celebs like Lauren Conrad, Megan Fox, Halle Berry and Nicky Hilton. His Organic Button Down Tee is a staple that combines comfort and style. CC Skye continues to be a huge celeb favourite, especially the neon brights featured in the new season collection. Eugenia Kim hats are great for summer sun and have been seen recently on Nicole Richie, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Jessica Alba and Lindsay Lohan.
What are your favourite pieces?I would have to say Fiona Paxton’s range. Her designs are textiles-based and so unique. A lot of her designs are based on movement and the way a piece drapes on the body. They are at the same time the most unusual and comfortable pieces to wear. Giles & Brother would be a close second.
What are your future plans? We are in the process of expanding right now, adding clothing, swimwear, and footwear to our stable. Sourcing new labels from around the world is one of the most enjoyable aspects. Right now we are really looking forward to making Trilby Phoenix a “two way street”. To date, we’ve focused on importing labels from overseas and making the pieces seen on celebrities accessible to Australians. But now we’ve begun stocking Australian labels and promoting them internationally. It’s great to be able to showcase Australian designs in an overseas market.
Any advice for budding entrepreneurs who want to follow in your footsteps?Do your research! It is easy to become swept up in the excitement of a new venture and skim over essential details. It is so important to consider every aspect when planning a new business.
