One LBD, 365 days and whopping $60,000 is Sheena Matheiken’s incredible achievement. We chat to the sustainable fashion crusader to find out more.

Did you have to carefully plan each look?
When I get dressed, it’s spontaneous and often chaotic, but I like the unpredictability of how an outfit comes together. If I were to really plan out 365 days, I would’ve driven myself crazy. The days I had the most fun was when I wore more outrageous outfits like the Mermaid parade on June 20, 2009 and Halloween on October 31, 2009.

Did people donate accessories?
There were hundreds of donations, too many memorable ones to pick. You can see them all at our current auction that the eBay Green Team has organised. The auction is now live at The Uniform Project.

Did you think you’d be able to raise so much money?
I had a hunch that it would take off and get some interest, but never to this scale. I knew it had potential because it was really neat idea with an effective fundraising platform.

Did you think this project would attract so much interest world wide?
Outside of the UK and US, Australia is our biggest support base. We also have traffic from Japan, Europe, South America and Canada.

What did you get out of it on a personal note?
I had no idea it would turn out to be so massive. I started The Uniform Project as a creative outlet, which would allow me to leverage all my skills. I've actually just resigned from my current job as a creative director at an interactive agency, and am now planning to pursue this fulltime. The UP team is a skinny crew but a passionate one. Everyone involved behind the scenes has come together out of love and the global community it has created is our biggest asset.

Are you really  into fashion?
I think style comes out of your own sense of self. I have never been into trends and labels but I have always admired designers with a unique aesthetic and vision.

Did your dresses get super-smelly (I had to ask)?

Not at all, I do have seven of them. I hand wash them and they've held up really well.
