Bobbi Brown Sunless Self Tanning Gel, $60, 1800 061 326.

How easy was it to apply? The gel made application super simple. It was like rubbing in a moisturiser, only not.
What was the colour like? Light to medium.
What was the smell like? I ended up smelling like a summer vacation!
Would you use it again? I loved the colour so I’d definitely use it again, but because it absorbed into the skin so quickly, smarty pants me thought it was rubbed in evenly. Who can guess how that turned out?

How easy was it to apply? It’s hard to make a mistake with this one. The clear lotion goes on evenly for a light glow that’s perfect for spring. Just don’t mistake it for a moisturising lotion – this one is just a gradual tanner, so use it in conjunction with a moisturiser to stop your faux tan from flaking.
What was the colour like? As someone who is normally as pale as Snow White all year round, I was apprehensive about using a fake tan. Would it be too orange on my fair skin? But after a few compliments on my new ‘natural’ tan, I was sold!
What was the smell like? A pretty tropical scent that had me thinking it was summer, even when I was shivering in my winter woollies.
Would you use it again? Definitely. I need to be beach ready for my upcoming holiday.
L’Oréal Paris Sublime Bronze Pro Perfect Airbrush Effect Self Tanning Mist, $21.45, 1300 659 359.

How easy was it to apply? I used this fake tan last summer – it’s perfect for lazy girls like me. The spray means I can apply it in a hurry (you still need to rub it in to avoid streaks, but that takes no time at all), and the fact that it’s clear means I didn’t spray paint my bathroom at the same time I did my legs.
What was the colour like? Light to medium and very natural.
What was the smell like? Not too bad. It definitely smells like tan, but don’t they all?
Would you use it again? I’m already stocking up.
St Tropez Whipped Bronze Mousse, $39.95, 1800 358 999.

How easy was it to apply? Super easy. I had to throw out a few elbows to get first dibs on this one. It’s pretty much a SHOP tanning staple – apparently certain staffers have even mastered applying it in taxis on the way to functions!
What was the colour like? Even though Fanta-tanned Victoria Beckham is supposedly a fan, I think its one of the best dark yet natural tans I’ve tried.
What was the smell like? Definitely like fake tan, but not offensive.
Would you use it again? It’s a bit pricey but I’d splash out for a special occasion.
Clinique Quick Bronze Tinted Self-Tanner Mousse, $33, clinique.com.au.

How easy was it to apply? I’m a big fan of the year-round tan and I love using mousse. Because it’s tinted it initially looked like I had done a really bad job, but once the tint washed off the coverage was great.
What was the colour like? A nice rich golden brown.
What was the smell like? Quite strong initially, but after the first shower I couldn’t really smell anything.
Would you use it again? Yep. While it’s not the best one I’ve ever used, it was still pretty good.

How easy was it to apply? I long ago perfected the art of applying a fake tan mousse, so for me it was a cinch.
What was the colour like? Although it’s only for one wear, the instant colour is great. This is one of the darkest and most natural shades on the market, even on my peaches and cream complexion.
What was the smell like? What smell?
Would you use it again? Absolutely.
