Still can’t get that faux glow just right? Ellina Hayes from
adoretanning.com lets us in on the tips of the trade - farewell telltale Oompa Loompa hands!
Do you need to exfoliate before a tan? You should exfoliate before every fake tan application, paying particular attention to dryer areas like knees, ankles, wrists and elbows. You must also make sure your exfoliant is oil-free as oil creates a barrier between your skin and the tanner.
Should you moisturise? Moisturise as much as possible after the tan application. To prep your skin before tanning, exfoliate and do not apply moisturiser, deodorant or make-up.
How long before you can shower after an application? Dihydroxyacetone or DHA is the main ingredient in fake tan that makes your skin go brown. You can shower six to eight hours after the application, however DHA takes up to 24 hours to develop, so the longer you leave it the better.
What are the no-no’s immediately after tanning?- Spray perfume
- Use deoderant
- Exercise or do anything that will make you sweat
- Swim
- Have a pedicure
What about shaving and waxing? Shave the day prior to your tan application and wax two days before. Shaving or waxing after the application will only remove it.
How do you remove patchiness on areas like your hands and feet?If applying the tan yourself make sure you wash your hands after and only apply a light coat to those areas that are usually drier (hands, feet, elbows etc). If after six or so hours these areas are too dark give them a light scrub with a face washer, if that’s not enough, exfoliate.
How long should a spray tan last for? It’s all about preparation and maintenance. If you have followed the rules your colour should last three to five days. Your tan will completely fade after 10-14 days.
Should you use a different fake tan for my face? If you get a professional fake tan application from a salon, the product used on your face will be the same as for the rest of your body, however the technician won’t make your face as dark as the rest of your body. If applying at home, you can use the same product unless you have sensitive skin and then you should use one specific to your skin type.
What’s a tan extender? A tan extender is a moisturiser with a small amount of DHA, using it extends the life of your tan.
How do you get rid of a peeling tan? Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
