From making bath salts in an old bathtub in Bondi, former musician Brett Pattinson decided to start an Australian natural beauty range called Bod.

What’s your background?
I enrolled in the Nature Care College and spent four years studying aromatherapy shiatsu and naturopathy. I finished my studies in Japan and, after graduating, I ran a successful natural therapies centre. It was during this time that I began to develop my own natural skincare range and in 1998 I launched Bod. My focus was belief-driven – I wanted to create products that were free from harmful ingredients and filled with goodness. Beauty is on the inside and I believe it’s the same for products – it’s what is inside the bottle that counts.

How did you get started?
I developed a serious illness a few years ago and conventional medicine couldn’t help me. I began to search for a holistic answer and enrolled in Nature Care College.

What are your dry skin survival tips?
Use oil-based products rather than cream-based products and wear natural lip balms to prevent dry and cracked lips from the elements. Take vitamins and herbs like garlic, vitamin C, olive leaf and astragalus. If you can take the time out, have a hot bath in Epsom salts and other essential oils.

What should we be looking for in skincare products?
Look for natural ingredients with no nasties and high amounts of active ingredients. The main thing I look for in products is that they smell and feel great on your skin.

Do you need a different product for the different seasons?
Not really, but I do think that you need to rotate products so your skin doesn’t get used to the same product all the time.

Why is natural skincare better?
I believe we all face enough challenges with our planet as it is – we breathe bad air, eat genetically modified food, our houses are full of electrical gadgets and we use appliances like microwaves – so let’s give our bodies a break and use natural ingredients instead of more chemicals.
